Ditchling travelled to local rivals Lewes looking to revenge their defeat early in the season.
The first half was very even with both teams refusing to concede. The Ditchling pack were strong and organised in the rucks and tried to open the game whenever they had the chance. They were evenly matched by a well coached Lewes team who eventually scored an unconverted try to take a 5:0 lead into the break
Things opened up in the second half with strong tackling and sustained pressure leading to a penalty after 5mins, which was calmly slotted over by Nick Whitley-Jones.
Continuing to move the ball at any opportunity the backs began to find gaps and on the 50 minute mark after a flowing move, Whitley-Jones touched down in the corner for Ditchling’s first try. Without the conversion this gave Ditchling a 5:8 lead.
This spurred Lewes into action who responded soon after with a try of their own to restore their lead to 12:8.
Ditchling began to win the fine margins and after 65 minutes winger Joe Holland-Villa scored in the corner to give a slender 12-13 lead. In the final 15mins both sides had opportunities to add to their tally, but Ditchling managed to hold out for the win.
This win takes Ditchling above Lewes in the table and up to 5th place. Next Saturday welcomes 4th place Pulborough for the rearranged fixture that was abandoned back in December.
